Althenia Sando has been awarded the maintenance, conservation and repair service for the urban green infrastructure of León (Lot 4). A project that includes the conservation of green areas and its artistic heritage, including the symbolic gardens of León. Althenia Sando will provide the service for the next 8 years.
The City Council of León has contemplated more than a hundred artistic spaces for the scope of this service. Each of them will require an individual solution. The work carried out by Althenia Sando can be differentiated according to the materials used, between actions on stone elements (from rock such as marble, granite, slate, glass, plaster or concrete) or on metallic elements.
Conservation and repair of monuments
Among the work on the stone elements are the remains of a Roman-period canal in the well-known Parque de El Cid, for which Althenia Sando will carry out conservation under archaeological criteria in its intervention.
Services to be carried out include: specialised cleaning against fouling (aqueous, mechanical or chemical methods); removal of contamination of biological origin; removal of soluble salts embedded in the interior of the rock; filling of cracks or adhesion of fragments; as well as the addition of new replacement materials and protective treatments against external agents.
he actions towards the metallic elements that will be implemented will be related to cleaning, considering the need for the drying process to avoid corrosion. As well as the reintegration of elements, the bonding of elements by welding processes, or consolidation and protection systems to create a barrier against the corrosive environment, or even acts of vandalism.
Wooden pieces, although rare, will also receive specific treatment for their conservation.
The sustainable conservation of a cultural property
Althenia Sando, as a company specialising in sustainable cleaning and conservation, will apply its technical expertise to draw up a global and specific Preventive Conservation Plan for each element that integrates protocols for respecting the environment and protecting cultural assets.
To develop this plan, an analysis of the element’s state will be carried out as a continuous process to be developed before, during and after the interventions. This will allow the implementation of procedures for monitoring and controlling deterioration risks, scheduled maintenance protocols and emergency response measures.
