The aim of the project is to recover the appropriate hydro-geological conditions of the wetlands
Althenia, a company specializing in environmental work on behalf of Sando, has been awarded the UTE contract for the Restoration and Reinstatement of Natural Spaces where the "La Milagrosa" quarry is located in Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz. The work has been given the go-ahead by the General Management Council for Environmental Work which is part of the Junta de Andalucía´s Regional Ministry for the Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries.
The aim of this project is to rectify environmental problems associated with ground impoverishment in the basin of the ‘Laguna de Los Tollos’ lagoon and the surrounding area as a result of mining activity which was carried out between 1976 and 1998.
Althenia’s task is to restore the correct hydro-geological conditions of the wetlands and associated biological processes. This will be achieved through a number of different objectives, such as packing the quarry basin with in-fill, carrying out morphological conditioning work and restoring the countryside.
It is anticipated that the regeneration project will help restore the topography of the area and recover impoverished ground in the basin of the former lagoon and bordering areas. The aim is to prevent surface water (salty) connecting with freshwater channels which flow over the top of the impacted stones. By re-establishing the hydrological processes on the surface, the habitat will recover and this in turn will lead to greater biodiversity as well as restoring the lagoon’s natural periods of rainfall.
Althenia, a company which specializes in environmental projects on behalf of Sando, is proud to take on this challenge in association with the Company. The project will help protect and regenerate the Environment, thus contributing to Sando’s policy of sustainable development.
