The jury recognised the urban development project as a model of environmental responsibility
The project for the development of the Plaza del Milenio and its surroundings in Valladolid, by the architect Sara Delgado Vázquez, from DAD Arquitectura, and in partnership with EXP Architects, received the First Prize in the ABC-Sando Award for Sustainable construction.
The jury evaluates a range of criteria including innovation, efficiency in the use of natural resources, environmental and social responsibility and economic cost. The decision of the jury was unanimous.
The project consisted of the redevelopment of the Plaza del Milenio and the surrounding area in Valladolid, including a public underground parking lot and the construction of a singular multifunctional domed building (the dome was recycled from the “Pabellón de la Sed” of the Zaragoza Expo). It included generous public spaces with fountains and green areas connected to the banks of the Pisuerga River.
Environmental responsibility was at the forefront of the project, particularly in the choice of materials, water treatment and energy efficiency. A key element in the project design was harmonious integration within the surrounding areas and the rational use of public transport, curbing the use of private automobiles and encouraging the use of bicycles.
The jury consisted of a range of nationally recognised construction specialists and technicians, and presided over by Javier Serra María-Tomé, assistant general director for Construction Quality and Innovation of the Ministry of Public Works. Other jurors were Felipe Pich-Aguilera, architect and president of the Green Building Council España; Javier González Ramiro, director of Urban Development of SEPES; José Abraham Carrascosa, Dean of the College of Roads, Ports and Canals Engineers of Andalucia, Ceuta and Melilla; and Vicente Antón Maicas, director of Technical Services of Sando.
