The Renfe-Guadalmedina and Guadalmedina-Atarazanas sections have joined up after excavating the two Tunnels. This is a historic milestone for Malaga. The underground will soon reach the city centre thanks to the excellent pace of the works being carried out by the Sando construction company in a joint venture.
At the ceremony to announce the connection of the two tunnels, the President of the Autonomous Government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, stressed the work carried out by the construction companies to promote the reactivation of the works: “I want to thank the effort, commitment and tremendous willingness all the workers and management teams are putting in”.
The event was also attended by the Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre; the Minister of Public Works, Marifrán Carazo; Sando’s CEO, Luis Sánchez, and the General Manager of Construction, Jaime Rodríguez.
The screen separating the two sections was demolished at 11 a.m. when one of the machines knocked down the reinforced concrete wall connecting the Renfe-Guadalmedina and Guadalmedina-Atarazanas sections. Underneath the Guadalmedina riverbed, this connection marks the beginning of the last phase of excavation and construction of the tunnels. The architecture and installations of the stations are also being carried out at the same time.
Sando is the only construction company that has participated in the execution of all the Malaga metro sections. It is also currently completing the extension of the Gran Vía station in Madrid.
