Juanma Moreno, president of the Junta de Andalucía, has inaugurated the Guadalmedina metro station. This station, built by Sando in a joint venture with Acciona, is the largest in Andalusia. He was accompanied by the Regional Minister of the Presidency, Elías Bendodo, the Regional Minister of Public Works, Marifrán Carazo, and the Mayor of Málaga, Francisco De la Torre.
The Guadalmedina station is the largest of all the Andalusian metro stations. An indication of its size is that it required Sando to extract 120,000 cubic metres of earth and its roots are 26 metres deep. It has two underground platform levels, both of which are located on the same level as lines 1 and 2 of the Malaga Metro.
The stop has three access points for Metro passengers. One of them is located in Callejones del Perchel, another in Avenida de la Aurora, and the third in Armengual de la Mota. From all of them, users will access a large 2,800 square metre lobby. Each entrance also has a lift to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility.
The Guadalmedina station includes a second role related to the city’s culture and past. In an adjoining space lie part of the archaeological remains unearthed during the construction works. During the execution of the works, Sando obtained the Technological Innovation certification in R&D&I for the design of a construction method to safeguard the archaeological remains.
The Demarcation of Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla of the Association of Civil Engineers (CICCP) approved the award of the prize for the Best Andalusian Public Works to the Malaga Metro. The award recognises the innovation applied to the execution of the infrastructure in the field of civil works. Sando is the only construction company that has participated (in different consortiums) in all the underground sections of the Malaga Metro project.
