The Government Pavilion, Auditorium and open spaces project of the University of Malaga (UMA) has won the first Malaga Architecture Prize 2022 awarded by the Association of Architects. Sando has executed the construction of the complex of buildings.
The Malaga Architecture Awards 2022 gala highlighted the project by the architects Roberto Ercilla Abitua, Rubén Alcolea Rodríguez, Jorge Tárrago Mingo and Luis Gil-Delgado Díez as the main prize-winner.
The jury highlighted the relationship created between the interior and exterior spaces through the different rooms and gardens. This project focuses on the classic character of the buildings destined for public and educational institutions with rectangular floor plans whose protagonist role is organised around its two central courtyards with a cloister-like character.
The government pavilion and auditorium have been structurally built with reinforced concrete with a ventilated façade and rock wool insulation to reduce energy consumption. The project, as indicated by the UMA during its presentation, emphasises the Sustainability of the facilities. It highlights the double glazing of the facades that allows natural light to penetrate, while reducing cooling and lighting needs. A design that is always in line with the landscape project.
Award-winning projects
The uniqueness of the project and its careful execution by Sando earned it the Macael White Marble Work Prize awarded by the Andalusian Marble Businessmen’s Association earlier this year. In total, almost 16,000 square metres of marble have been used in flooring, ventilated façade and ceilings, stairs, cladding and benches.
In April, the project Government Pavilion, Auditorium and open spaces for the University of Malaga also received a special mention at the 14th edition of the COAVN Architecture Awards organised by the Official Basque-Navarran Association of Architects.
In recent months, Sando has received two awards that reflect the quality of the infrastructures it builds, specifically from the Association of Civil Engineers of Andalusia and Madrid. Firstly, at the end of the year it won the award for Best Andalusian Public Works for the Malaga Metro. It also won the award for Best Public Works of 2021 in February for the Gran Vía Station Expansion Project for the Madrid Metropolitan Railway.
