The new highway, which bypasses the town of Moraleja, has a viaduct, two underpasses and a flyover
A new stretch of motorway 5.3 kilometres in length, opened to the public today forming part of the EX-A1 Motorway in the North of Extremadura. This work has been carried out by Sando UTE (Temporary Union of Companies) as part of the Government of Extremadura’s Road Plans.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by the President of the Regional Government of Extremadura, José Antonio Monago; the Minister for Works, Housing, Regional Planning and Tourism, Víctor del Moral, and the mayors of Coria and Moraleja, José Manuel García and Pedro Caselles, respectively.
The new stretch passes through the municipalities of Casa de Don Gómez and Moraleja, both being separated by the river Árrago. The road in each direction has a maximum width of 10.5 metres and is 10 metres wide on average. The stretch starts immediately after the Huélaga link and finishes at the EX-108 main road which links the towns of Moraleja and Zarza la Mayor.
Where the motorway crosses the river Árrago, which separates the municipalities, a viaduct has been constructed comprising two slabs measuring 105,20 metres in length, sustained by a structure of two parallel stainless steel arches filled with concrete, which allows the river to follow its course.
61,827 tons of asphalt was used to construct this stretch of motorway, 29,837 cubic metres of Soil Cement and just for the viaduct over the river Árrago more than six hundred thousand kilogrammes of steel.
From the environmental point of view, ramps for fauna to escape have been made of earth, covered with coconut fibre and banks of vegetation, and indigenous plant species replanted in all areas affected by the construction work, as well as other requirements established by the Environmental Impact Declaration.
The Motorway in the North of Extremadura establishes an important communication hub between Navalmoral de la Mata and Portugal: on the one hand it has become the main route in and out of the area for industry and the transportation of products between the North of Extremadura and the centre of Portugal, connecting with the A-66 La Plata Motorway and the A-5 Motorway in Extremadura; and on the other hand, it will stimulate tourism with people driving on holiday from the centre of the Peninsular.
Sando is a leading international construction company, noted for its technical know-how, solid reputation, Sustainability and reliability.
