The La Cabrera Tunnels were perforated on Friday January 25 at 2 p.m.
The company has beaten the international daily tunnelling record with the tunnelling machine in this tunnel on at least five occasions
Sando has completed the excavation of the first tunnel in the Siete Aguas-Buñol stretch. This is the longest tunnel along the entire route. The stretch is part of the Madrid-Castilla La Mancha-Comunidad Valenciana-Región de Murcia High speed Railway Line, a project awarded by ADIF on a Temporary Business Union basis.
The AVE will reach Valencia after passing through the La Cabrera tunnels, one in each direction and each being 7,156 metres in length. Sando has completed the first one using two excavation methods: from the opening of Siete Aguas, by means of blasting and conventional methods and advancing some 1,158 metres, and from the opening of Buñol, with a double-shield tunnelling machine used to tunnel 5,998 metres. The connection of the tunnel at both openings was executed on Friday January 25 at 2 p.m.
The La Cabrera tunnel is the first one in the history of the Comunidad Valenciana in which a double-shield tunnelling machine has been used. This machine is capable of excavating and placing the reinforced concrete rings in the tunnel at the same time, in a synchronised manner.
Along the almost six kilometres excavated with the tunnelling machine, the Sando team has beaten the international daily tunnelling record on five occasions, setting the world record at 83.2 metres excavated and 52 concrete rings placed in just one day. Similarly, the average daily output was 21 rings, corresponding to 33.6 m/day of tunnel executed.
The Siete Aguas-Buñol stretch is 11.2 kilometres long, and in addition to containing the longest tunnels in the line, the La Cabrera tunnels are formed by a further three tunnels and two viaducts that cross rugged, mountainous terrain.
The Sand Group is also executing the Abia de la Obispalía-Cuenca, Iniesta-Minglanilla and Santa Cruz de la Zarza-Tarancón stretches of this AVE line, in addition to participating in the construction of the Madrid-Zaragoza-Barcelona-French Border, the Atlantic Line, and the Sevilla-Cádiz and Bobadilla-Granada lines. It has also taken part in the recently-opened Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid and Córdoba-Málaga lines.
Sando is an international companies group which has undergone constant growth during the past five years and is one of the top ten building firms in Spain. 2007 forecasts indicate a new increase in its turnover, reaching the figure of 1,000 million euros.
