The painstakingly restored and reconstructed ice well is to be used as a cultural space for conferences and exhibitions.
Sando Environment, a division of the Sando Group completed the restoration of the ice well, ‘El Pozo de la Nieve’, in San Ildefonso, a historic element of the city restored for use as a cultural and exhibition space. This morning, José Luis Vázquez, Mayor of San Ildefonso, inaugurated the building in a public ceremony.
The renovation of ‘El Pozo de la Nieve’ consisted of two separate projects: the construction of a visitors reception centre, connected to the ice well by means of an underground gallery, and the renovation of the well itself, with the construction of a spherical and translucent snow white glass structure.
The project, executed by Sando in a joint venture with other companies, required a range of different actions: from archaeological excavations uncovering and restoring the structure, to the construction of new buildings and facilities for visitors to the site.
The renovation of ‘El Pozo de la Nieve’ has been a slow and painstaking task, reconstructing the complex while preserving the original structure, fully restoring this historic site, neglected and forgotten since the 18th century.
