Sando Construcción is executing the connection between the river Iro and the historic city centre for the Chiclana Town Council in Cadiz. These works will enhance the value of the cultural resources offered by this city with the enclave of the castle of Chiclana de la Frontera.
The work consists of constructing a lookout tower in a garden that will be connected by a footbridge to the hill itself, thus recovering a natural connection between the highest points of Chiclana de la Frontera and the level of the river. This will enable new primary tourist access to the historic centre of Chiclana, replacing the current one that runs through the streets of the historic centre, which has accessibility problems for people with reduced mobility.
Among the actions being carried out is the construction of the tower, 32 metres high, which is made of reinforced concrete with a rectangular section of 3.6 x 5.4 metres, and the walls are built using the climbing formwork technique. The tower’s foundations are built on 36 micropiles with a diameter of 22 cm, and the exterior cladding is made of fibre cement panels made from Equitone.
A metal structure of rectangular profiles with a surface area of 5.4 x 5 metres is used to construct the viewing platform. It has three longitudinal profiles, between which some triangulations serve as bracing elements for the structure and support for the composite slab with corrugated sheet metal.
The footbridge connecting the lookout tower with Chiclana is a 46.35 metre-long footbridge made up of two independent structures, an 8.6 metre-long detachable metal structure clad in treated pine wood and another footbridge giving access to two levels of the tower with a length of 37.75 metres. For support, it is supported on the abutment by three strapped and anchored neoprenes and an intermediate pile.
The foundation pile comprises a 1 x 5.7-metre rectangular section of the concrete screen, 12.7 metres above the top face of the foundation.
The primary materials used in the project include 650 m3 of reinforced concrete, 75 tonnes of S355 J2 structural rolled steel, 680 m2 of fibre cement cladding on the tower, 240 m2 of glass balustrade on the walkway, and 250 m2 of Scots pine lining and decking.
A project to revitalise the historic centre of Chiclana
With this project, Sando Construcción is helping improve accessibility to the historic centre and the connection with the coastal area, the main tourist attraction in the area.
In its execution, Sando deploys the experience and specialisation of its teams in construction infrastructures aimed at the humanisation of urban environments, reconfiguring spaces under Sustainability criteria whose design is adapted to the needs of citizens. In this case, the works will bridge the unevenness that connects the archaeological site with the city’s busy tourist routes, facilitating the comfort and accessibility of visitors and citizens.
