Sando has patented a system for the prevention of accidents at work when using elevating platforms

The company has brought their SAFE-PEMP research project to an end with a device which can be installed on any elevating work platform
In line with their policy on Occupational Risk Prevention and R&D, the Sando group of companies has been working on a research project throughout this last year called SAFE-PEMP, which has led to a device being patented, the purpose of which is to prevent accidents on Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP).

The model registered in the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office consists of a “Safety basket for elevating platforms” which reduces the risk of collision and prevents workers from falling off this type of platform. It consists of an active safety system which sends a signal and alarm to the work foremen when a worker is not properly anchored to the rail, of if there is a risk of the basket colliding with another object. The device incorporates mobile sensors, radiofrequency and ultrasound. It is hard-wearing and able to withstand environmental or other external impacts.

The patent has a dual purpose: on the one hand, the company would like to install the device on the elevating work platforms they use, so that it has a bearing on safety protection and the well-being of their workers; and on the other hand, to commercialise the device.

This “Safety basket for elevating platforms" patented by Sando fulfils its risk prevention role by emitting warning signals and alerts so as accidents can be avoided for the workers and warns the foremen through anchoring and anti-collision systems.

In this way, if the operator accesses the basket without anchoring their harness, (which is compulsory), an acoustic alarm is activated as well as a warning light and, if this situation continues, the device automatically alerts the foremen overseeing the work by sending them an e-mail. Also, while the basket is moving, if it gets too close to an obstacle, the system sends a warning to the operator by sounding an alarm and simultaneously setting off a warning light.

Together with Sando, Dtek and Malaga University have taken part in this R&D project. SAFE-PEMP has also been supported by the Andalusia Technology Corporation and the Idea Agency. The device which is the result of this research project can be installed on any type of mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), whether used for the construction or industry sectors.
