The new Centre will have three floors and a large parking area
This morning, the first stone was laid for the construction of the building which will house the Antonio Machado and Núñez Main Central Library at the University of Seville. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by the vice-chancellor, Antonio Ramírez de Arellano.
The company Sando is responsible for building this project which will take 18 months and has a budget of 4.2 million euros. Approximately 30 workers are thought to be needed to carry out the work, not counting those involved indirectly.
Located in Avenida Eritaña, the building, which will comprise 5,689.56 square metres, has been designed with a linear structure, in the form of a sculpture, with different breaks on the various floors so as the building can be adapted to the unevenness of the ground.
At the entrance to the building, where the plot is narrower, a stone plaque will be built with glass-curtain walls. The construction of a large open area on the West façade will make the main entrance feel more spacious and more in line with the other two university buildings, the Mexican and Brazilian Blocks. Stone and sheet metal are the materials which will be used for the front of the building.
The lay-out will consist of an underground area for parking, the technical offices and storerooms and three floors above ground where the library rooms will be arranged.
The new Central Library will incorporate book collections from the old Tobacco Factory, with more than 1,600,000 volumes from Historical Archives and from the collection of Old Books at the University of Seville.
