The inventory brings together documentary and visual information about 1,730 Tunnels of the national Railway network.
Last week, the Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz Gallardon, presided over the presentation of the book INVENTARIO DE TUNELES FERROVIARIOS DE ESPAÑA (Inventory of Spanish Railway Tunnels), published by the Spanish Railways Foundation (FFE), under the sponsorship of Grupo Sando. The ceremony was held at the office of the Foundation in Madrid, and the following were present: the president of Sando, Jose Luis Sanchez Dominguez; the councillor for Housing and Urban Development in Madrid, Pilar Martinez, and the managing director of the Foundation, Carlos Zapatero.
In his speech, Ruiz Gallardon congratulated the President of Grupo Sando and he praised the initiative, commenting that “the publication sponsored by Grupo Sando, within the framework of actions of corporate social responsibility that the most prestigious companies carry out, is an example to follow. Civil society values this kind of contribution more and more”.
The publication brings together the railways tunnels that are built present throughout Spain. In this work, it is possible to see the rich heritage and great diversity of types, forms and materials that were, and are now, being used for their construction.
The book makes available all the information needed to get to know the country’s 1,730 tunnels, which are found along the 14 railway corridors. These corridors have been subdivided into lines, including those open to service, those that are closed or unfinished and the new high-speed corridors, either working or soon to be inaugurated.
In order to make it easier to understand, each line presents one or more maps that show the route of the railway, including the topographical representation, as well as a table with the name of the company, the year when it was built, the municipality and province, length and type, etc. It is also illustrated with photographs.
The editor of the book, Manuel Melis, Professor of Railways at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, gave a speech at the presentation of the publication. The book was a collaborative effort, put together by Miguel Jimenez Vega, geographer, expert in Town and Country Planning and Land Transport and Domingo Cuellar Villar, who has a doctorate in History. It also had the participation of a group of students from the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
The sponsor, Grupo Sando, has been working for thirty years in the business of public construction projects. Currently, railway activity is an important part of the company’s plans, with involvement in lines such as Segovia-Valladolid, Madrid-Levante, Bobadilla-Granada, Cordoba-Malaga, etc. Last year, Grupo Sando sponsored another volume, also published by the FFE, which was an inventory of railway bridges.
The book is distributed by Ediciones Doce Calles (docecalles@infonegocio.com)
