Contracting authority: Community of Madrid
The project consists of the construction of a new building that acts as an extension to the Regional Archaeological Museum of the Community of Madrid, located in Alcalá de Henares. A unique construction of six floors and 3,290 square metres.
As the Community of Madrid has indicated, the extension will allow the museum to increase its activity in the areas of research, restoration, archaeological excavations, teaching, exhibitions and cultural activities, among others, thanks to the spaces for the library, book depository, archive and the provision of a didactic area for children.
With the aim of safeguarding the cultural and historical heritage of the building, a former Dominican Convent School of the Mother of God dating from 1576, Sando uses classical materials in keeping with the museum itself, combining materials such as concrete, stucco and curtain walls in specific parts of the façades to achieve a defined aesthetic result.
Innovative and sustainable design
The new building has large, flexible spaces that give the complex an open-plan character, as well as a simple volumetry for the new building, through a clear concept of the interior spaces, with views to the exterior from different points of the building.
This building has been built using Sando’s expertise in sustainable construction, for which various measures have been integrated to ensure compliance with environmental parameters. In this way, the building has been designed with energy efficiency in mind, through the natural lighting of the building or through independent ventilation systems.
