The work to extend the Cercanías to La Cartuja consists of constructing the C2 Santa Justa-La Cartuja line, which connects the capital with the Cartuja 93 Science and Technology Park. Three new stations are being commissioned for this project: San Jerónimo (new construction), Estadio Olímpico and La Cartuja (refurbishing existing stations). The relevant electrification installations are also being carried out to install ADIF CA-160 type catenary.
To achieve the Seville C-2 suburban line, it is necessary to act on several existing lines and branches, adapting them in some cases and duplicating them in others. The lines affected by the works are: Madrid-Seville line, Los Naranjos junction, Huelva branch line, Madrid-Seville outer branch line, Seville-Huelva line, international gauge access to Isla de la Cartuja (Expo’92) and La Cartuja-La Cartuja junction. Among the actions carried out are the replacement of existing exhausts and turnout devices with P-type turnout devices, work to change the gauge of the tracks, and work on the existing stations of Estadio Olímpico and La Cartuja and the new construction of San Jerónimo station, the existing Estadio Olímpico and La Cartuja stations and the new construction of the San Jerónimo station.
The San Jerónimo station comprises a more than 300 square metres building, a 4,600 square metre car park with 71 parking spaces, bicycle parking, motorbike parking, a taxi rank and a bus stop.
At Estadio station, the construction of a fully equipped station building is underway In addition, the demolition of the old platforms and the construction of two new 200-square-metre platforms are being carried out at track level.
At La Cartuja station, with a textile covering design, work is being carried out to remove old tarpaulins, sand paint the trusses and replace the tarpaulins along the platforms. As well as the remodelling of the building of more than 300 square metres, with the urbanisation of the access area.
These railway operation actions on the infrastructure and track are compatible with the works to be carried out on the Electrification Installations.
The electrification installations consist of the implementation, following the new route, of the ADIF CA-160 type overhead contact line on the projected double track and dismantling of the existing installations. The supply voltage for the catenary shall be 3,000 watts D.C. . The section will be supplied from the Salteras substation and the Majarabique substation.
