Contracting authority: Virgen del Rocío University Hospital
Sando has executed several projects at the Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío, such as: the construction of the Biomedical Research Centre, underground car park and general infrastructures; the construction of the footbridge connecting the four hospitals that form part of the campus; and the refurbishment of the Mental Health hospitalisation area.
The first project, referred to as a pioneer in Andalusia, was locating the Seville Biomedicine Institute, a four-star hotel, a nursery, an underground car park, and a shopping and leisure area in the same space. With a built surface area of more than 7,500 m2, it uses a lightened waffle slab structure with reinforced concrete pillars (155 m3 of reinforced concrete and 190,000 kg of corrugated steel). The enclosure is resolved with a curtain wall structure and ceramic cladding with slate textures.
As part of this project, work was also carried out on the infrastructure of the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital. Among these works are the refurbishment of the Children’s Hospital: adaptation of premises for changing rooms; refurbishment of accesses; refurbishment of the hospitalisation area on the 2nd floor of the B wing; and the refurbishment of the paediatric ICU area on the 1st floor. As well as refurbishing the neonatology area on the 1st floor of the Women’s Hospital.
Award-winning catwalk
The second highlight is the construction of a footbridge connecting the four hospitals that make up the campus of the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital (General, Traumatology and Rehabilitation, Children’s and Women’s Hospitals). With a length of 90 metres, this covered walkway facilitates the transfer of bedridden patients. It improves professionals’ circulation without going out into the street. The Canadian Grands Prix du Design awards have recognised this catwalk.
Another project that Sando executed was remodelling the Short Stay Mental Health Unit at the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital. A space of 1,000 square metres with 14 rooms for single or double occupancy, in which more than 900 patients are attended annually, who are admitted urgently and stay an average of ten days. The work carried out by Sando has made it possible to provide these patients with refurbished spaces that will improve the quality of care, safety and humanisation. Among the refurbishments, a group therapy room and 10 clinical consultations have been added so patients can continue their treatment more comfortably without leaving the ward.
In addition, an outdoor patio will be created with direct and unique access from the consultation area, where patients can enjoy a supervised and safe environment in contact with nature.
The Virgen del Rocío University Hospital was included in the Spanish ranking of the World’s Best Hospitals 2023 published in Newsweekd magazine.
